Claim Your Economic Stimulus Payment

April 12th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Tax season is once again upon us and the April 15th deadline is closing in fast. This year, taxes should be a bit special for most American households because of the Economic Stimulus Act signed into law by President Bush on February 13, 2008. Yes, 130 million households are entitled to tax rebates of varying amounts depending on situation and income. Here’s a nifty calculator that will calculate how much you’re entitled.

But, and this is important, you must file a tax return to receive your share. So if you don’t normally file taxes, you have to this year to get what’s rightfully yours. The good news is that people who are only filing to claim the rebate do not have to file by April 15 nor do they have to file for an extension. To receive the payment in 2008, they must file by October 15. So if you’re due some cash but don’t usually file a tax return, get cracking.

If you’d like more information about the upcoming tax rebates, here’s a couple good links:

My friend told me that some people broke into personal records at her grad school and filed tax returns for random people in order to get the Stimulus Check. I thought that was ridiculous to break the law like that just for some $600 checks. They could try working.

But isn’t that a federal offense? For that kind of fraud, how long could they go to jail for?
