Best Places to Build Wealth

July 6th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I saw an article on the Yahoo! Frontpage about the Best places to build wealth in America.  Can you guess which city topped the list?  You’d be right if you guessed Plano, Texas.  I don’t blame you if you didn’t though.  I know it definitely wasn’t the first city that came to my mind when I thought of accumulating gobs of money.  Neither were many of the other top cities.  Go figure.

The worst out of the 69 cities surveyed?  Good ol’ New York City which was doomed by its notoriously high cost of living.  And rounding out the bottom 5 was San Francisco.  Looks like I’m living in the wrong area.

Here’s the best and worst cities:

If you’re curious about the ranking criteria, the survey was conducted by Salary.com and took into account a variety of factors including salaries, cost of living and unemployment.  With those factors in mind, each city was essentially ranked on the greatest difference between income and costs.

On the surface, that methodology seems to make sense, but I’d definitely like to delve into the details.  As with any ranking, readers should take each with a grain of salt.  And even if the odds are not in my favor, I’ll take my chances.  I couldn’t imagine living and becoming wealthy anywhere else.

For those who want to learn more about the ranking, here’s the coverage at Salary.com and the full list of all 69 cities.
