The funny thing about economic recessions (as well as expansions) is that you don’t know if you’re in one until after the fact. And it looks like what everyone has been fearing was finally confirmed on Monday: the U.S. is in a recession and has been since December of last year.
This probably comes as no surprise to most people as economic indicators have foreshadowed this for quite a while and economic players have strategized on what to do. One of the most visible of those players is Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve. He’s a smart guy (economics degree from Harvard and an economics Ph.D from MIT and taught at Stanford, NYU, and Princeton) who has diligently studied the Great Depression so I am confident that he will lead us out of this recession the best and fastest way possible.
