Gift Card FYI
In California, a gift card holder is entitled to cash out the value of a gift card if the balance is less than $10. This is especially handy now that many retailers are at risk of bankruptcy. Even if you’re not worried about the financial viability of the retailer, redeeming your gift card will mean more money in your pocket for you to invest and grow. So if it’s convenient, taking advantage of this amendment to gift card law might make a lot of sense for many people.
However, many consumers have had trouble redeeming the value of their cards whether it was retail employees’ lack of awareness of this law or retailers’ systems inability to accommodate the transactions. If so, ask to speak with the manager. If that doesn’t work, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
